Well, they aren't actually gummi bears. They're gummi stars! I didn't have a bear mold, but they turned out just as delicious and just as cute! You won't believe how impossibly easy these are too. These are good treats for both adults and kids. So if you love picking up a package of gummis at the store, this recipe is a must try:
Ingredients:
- 1 package of jello (any flavor, but the small 3 oz package)
- 7 envelopes of unflavored gelatin (these come in small envelopes, usually 4 per package. The brand I bought was Gelatine and it comes in an orange package. Look for it in the jello aisle)
- 1/2 cup water
Directions:
- Mix everything together in a sauce pan. It will be thick, like paste.
- Heat over low heat until it's more liquid and melted.
- Pour into your mold.
- Put in the freezer for five minutes to firm up.
- That's it! Look at these little cherry bites of gummy goodness:
These little guys are a new favorite in my house. And by using sugar-free jello you can make a treat that you feel good about eating! And as for the mold, I picked them up at Michael's (craft store) for $1.99. You can do all shapes and sizes too. Fun for all ages!
My next experiment? Making SOUR gummi candy. I love those little tart bites and if I can recreate them in my kitchen I will be in heaven. Stay tuned!

AWESOME! It's so easy but it's very cool. I might make these this week.

MJ what about this?

my husband loves gummy bears, but sour gummy bears are his #1 candy! I hope your experiment turns out well! and good job on the stars!
Sounds interestingly good! I think I'll whip some up before vacation this week for a sweet treat on the road.
How cute! I will have to share this recipe with my friend who has kids!
My children will call you hero after I try this.
Love this idea! will be fun to make with kids!
Can't wait to see your sour creation!
I'm so impressed!
I'm so impressed, these look completely addicting! Sour patch kids are my favorite too - I hope you figure out how to make them so I can copy you :)
The idea of making my own gummy candies sounds awesome. I just have to find some cool molds that my sons will love!
Okay you are making me want to run out and buy a bag of gummy candy...I am afraid I would never get up the courage to make candy...I so desire to make fudge after watching Alton Brown the other day, and now you making this!
Wow! I've never thought of making them myself. My boys will be thrilled when we try this out. Thanks for sharing!
These look perfect - I am going to make them this weekend when I go to visit my niece and nephews.
I am making these for a Harry Potter Book Club that I lead at my organization's sumemr camp. I will be making them in the shape of bugs and such, but I have to make them with all Kosher gelatin which I have to order off the internet. I will let you know how they come out!
This recipe sounds really cool and I can't wait to try it!
Those seem like the perfect way to indulge in a childhood favorite, they are adorable!
I love gummis, but I've never thought to make them myself! Have to try this!!
I have been waiting to try this recipe for awhile now. I just picked up a pack of 10 different mold trays for $9 at Walmart!
I made a batch of these today! I even picked up the same star molds at Michael's. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
I decided to make these today....I think your recipe is a little off "7 PACKETS OF GELATIN"!!! They came out tough enough to use as hockey pucks!
Sorry they didn't turn out for you, AmandaG. Did you use the small packets of unflavored gelatin (not jello?)? Mine were chewy, just like gummy candies. Certainly not hockey pucks.... and I used to work for a hockey team so that reference makes me laugh!
I urge you to try again. They really are good! If I can get it right, surely you can. Because I mostly screw things up, ha!
Hi Molly, Thanks for the quick reply! This was my first try at making candy...other than fudge LOL! I used Knox gelatine (4 packets per box 28g/1oz). Maybe I got the jello wrong, I used a small box (85g/3oz) should it have been a 6oz pkg? Or did I heat it too long? I'll try again tomorrow and let you know what happens.
Amanda
Nope, that's exactly the right stuff! Perhaps you did overheat them? Or perhaps too long on the heat? Make sure it's over low... it might take awhile. Right once they become liquid, remove and fill your molds.
Good luck! I hope the second try works for you!! Come back and let me know :)
My boyfriend and I will love this eating gummi bears is how we met.... THANK YOU :D
Cute story, Charlotte! Enjoy!!
omg thank you so much for posting this!!! it's so easy i found it at 8:45 and now at 11pm i have 24 cute little candies waiting for my 3 year old to gobble down. i put her meds in them and hopefully this will make medicine time so much easier!!!!!
I have a feeling no one will respond to this as it has been years since the last comment, but here goes anyways....mine turned out like hockey pucks too!! :(
I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, but I am curious how does everyone pour their mixture into the molds without making a huge mess?
Hi Andrea! I'm so sorry they didn't turn out :( Perhaps try lower heat? Candy is TRICKY, that's for sure.
Also, have you tried putting the mixture in to any type of squeeze bottle to keep it less messy? I used squeeze bottles in this post: http://www.therookiechef.com/2011/06/pancake-art.html
The mixture would have to cool a bit though and I'm not sure if it would work for that type of bottle. Maybe try something else?
Let me know if you find a good trick :)

This turned out pretty darn well! I was looking for a recipe for some ginger chews, and while these aren't chewy they're still awesome. I put in a full .6 oz thing of ground ginger into the recipe...it was too much, but the basic recipe is helping me tweak them. Great snack on the deer stand!
Thank you for sharing it.
For Sour Patch Kids, buy some Citric Acid online- Amazon I'm sure has it. It's a powder- puckeringly tart. Grind it up very fine in a coffee or spice grinder (be sure to clean it out very well afterwards!) and mix it with granulated sugar sugar- I would think a ratio of about 60/40, sugar/citric acid. Taste. Adjust to your level of sour accordingly. Simply roll the completed gummies in the mix and there you go- sour gummies!
If you live in a very humid climate, I would roll them in the mix as you eat them- as the humidity and the moisture from the gummies themselves may melt the sugar in the powder mix on the outside- making a stick nasty mess. Good luck!
