Score! (and a recipe)

You know what I love? A good deal.

My husband calls me cheap, but I prefer the term 'frugal' instead. ;) Now that I have been cooking and baking a lot more, my poor little KitchenAid hand mixer is taking a beating (especially with buttercream for my Wilton classes).

So it was as if the stars aligned when I turned the corner from the garden section at Wal-Mart the other day. There, sitting all alone in the most beat up box I have ever seen, was a clearance priced Sunbeam stand mixer. Original price? $99. Clearance price? $50. When I went through the check out with my sadly roughed up box they took off an additional 10%. SCORE! A new mixer for $45!

Sure, I would LOVE to have a KitchenAid stand mixer but I can't justify the $300 price tag that comes along with it right now. Maybe when we buy our second house I will treat myself to a KA mixer (to hopefully match my someday bigger kitchen,) but for now I am the proud new owner of Sunbeam! I love this thing!

Check her out in all her glory as she works on The Chewy!

So back to the recipe. The Chewy by Alton Brown.

My husband decided I should justify my new purchase with a batch of chocolate chip cookies (he's so sneaky). I have heard lots of fabulous reviews about The Chewy so I decided to give it a try.

The cookie dough seemed a little thin after it was all mixed but it became more firm after it chilled in the refridgerator for a while. After scooping the dough on the baking sheet (I didn't use the very specific scoop that he mentions in his recipe) I decided to cross my fingers and see what happens.

The end result? The most beautiful looking cookie I've ever baked. But the flavor? A little off. My husband thought maybe I over mixed the cookie dough... I suppose that's possible since I did take the time to photograph my mixer while making them ;) Either way, they were good cookies but not the fabulous creation that I had hoped for after hearing rave reviews on The Chewy.

Your cookies are beautiful. And congrats on your mixer. Although I own a KA, my first mixer was a 1950s sunbeam that still worked. when I inherited it in 2006.

Congrats on the mixer! You'll love it. Maybe now you can make MARSHMALLOWS! Haha... I love marshmallows, and I killed my hand mixer trying to make them the first time. Now that I have a stand mixer, I make them ALL the time. I've even gotten it down to the perfect recipe because I've tried it so many times!

Now, on to those cookies! Yours look lovely! I must agree though, I didn't think The Chewy was the greatest CCC recipe I've ever had either. They are great, but not my fave.

Can't wait to see more posts using your mixer! That's a great deal you got on it!!

Congrats on your mixer. I had looked at purchasing a Sunbeam from Walmart but then my hubby said I could get one of my choice with our income tax money. I know what you mean about the hand mixer and cake icing. It was so great to finally have an automatic mixer to do it for me.

Just found your blog via Barefoot Bloggers. Love this story of your new mixer. I bought myself a new Kitchen Aid this winter - my justification? Alton's chewy cookies :) I'm not a big baker, but I do bake more now that I have that nice mixer. Can't let that expensive mixer just set there taking up precious counter space. Up next is Ina's pound cake.
